How to jpg to png

  1. Choose your JPG files, or drop them on the page.
  2. Choose whether to keep or remove the EXIF metadata.
  3. Press Convert. The re-encode is lossless: pixels in, same pixels out.
  4. Download the PNGs, individually or as a ZIP.

About JPG and PNG

JPG compresses photographs by discarding detail your eye barely registers, which is why every camera on earth defaults to it. PNG stores every pixel exactly and compresses by pattern instead, which is why design tools, screenshot apps and image editors save PNG. Converting JPG to PNG moves a photo from the lossy world into the lossless one.

What you gain: pixel-exact storage that survives future edits without generation loss. Edit a JPG ten times through ten tools and artefacts compound; edit a PNG and the pixels stay put. What you pay: size. A JPG photo becomes two to eight times larger as PNG, because camera noise is exactly the kind of chaotic detail PNG must store honestly.

This converter decodes the JPG and re-encodes it as PNG with no quality setting, because there is nothing to tune: PNG is lossless. What you get out is what you decoded, plus whatever metadata choice you made.

When this is the right move

You are handing the image to an editor or a workflow that will re-save it repeatedly, and you want a lossless working copy. You are hitting a form that demands PNG. You need to annotate a screenshot of a JPG without adding JPG artefacts on top.

When it is the wrong move: sharing. A JPG-to-PNG conversion of a camera photo produces a file that is larger for no visible benefit. For sharing, stay with JPG and use the compressor.

Limits and honest notes

The output PNG is 8-bit with alpha. A JPG cannot contain transparency, so the alpha channel is fully opaque; the value of PNG here is lossless storage, not transparency.

EXIF metadata (camera, timestamps, GPS) is dropped by default. Turn the toggle off to keep it. Either way, orientation saved in EXIF is applied to the pixels, so photos never come out sideways.

Files up to 25 MB each, 100 files per run. Nothing is uploaded; the decode and encode happen in this tab.

Frequently asked questions

Will the PNG look better than the JPG?

It will look identical. PNG is lossless, so no new artefacts are added, but the existing JPG artefacts are baked into the pixels and travel along. Converting cannot undo them.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

PNG stores photographic noise losslessly, which costs space. A 1 MB JPG photo commonly becomes 3 to 6 MB as PNG. That is the price of pixel-exact storage.

Can I get transparency this way?

No. The source JPG has no transparency to preserve, so the PNG is fully opaque.

Is my metadata kept?

By default it is removed, including GPS coordinates. Switch "Remove metadata" off to keep EXIF in the PNG.

Are my photos uploaded?

Never. The conversion runs in your browser, on your device.
