About AVIF and JPG

AVIF is the newest of the mainstream image formats: it compresses roughly half the size of JPG for the same picture, which is why modern sites serve it. The catch is the same as every young format: older viewers, some upload forms, many desktop apps and several print services still refuse it.

Converting AVIF to JPG trades that efficiency for universal acceptance. Your browser decodes AVIF natively, so this tool needs no extra download and starts instantly. Each image is decoded at full resolution and re-encoded as a standard JPG at the quality you pick, honouring the colour profile in the file.

Animated AVIF converts to a still of its first frame. Photos, screenshots and graphics all convert the same way; the output opens anywhere.

Limits and honest notes

Metadata is removed in the re-encode, including any GPS coordinates. Transparent AVIF images flatten onto white, because JPG has no alpha channel.

The JPG will usually be larger than the AVIF was; that is the cost of a file that opens everywhere. Quality 85 to 90 is the sweet spot for upload forms.

Files up to 25 MB each, 100 files per run. Nothing is uploaded: the conversion happens on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Why can some apps not open AVIF?

AVIF is recent (2020-ish in practice). Anything with an unupdated viewer refuses it. Converting to JPG once solves every such case.

Will the JPG be bigger than the AVIF?

Usually, slightly: AVIF is more efficient. That is the trade for compatibility.

Does it work for animated AVIF?

You get the first frame as a still JPG.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.

Private by design
